Understand the medical framework

Puerto Rico regulates medical access, not broadly legal recreational use. Documents are not police immunity or permission for public consumption, impaired driving, excess possession or unauthorized transfers. Ley 42-2017 (opens in a new tab)

Before your trip, set aside a few minutes to review your documents and write down anything you want clarified. Our local support team can help with evaluation questions and point you toward the program’s official information.

Check existing documents first

Article 116 allows qualifying out-of-jurisdiction documentation under its conditions; not every visitor needs a separate tourist ID. Reglamento 9038 · Art. 116 (opens in a new tab)

Article 149 sets patient responsibilities, including obtaining medicinal cannabis only from duly licensed dispensaries. Reglamento 9038 · Art. 149 / patient responsibilities (opens in a new tab)

Keep your identification and existing medical documents together. Ask support which documents apply to your situation, whether anything needs updating and where to find the relevant official guidance.

Make a simple document plan

Use these questions to organize a conversation with support or the responsible authority. Save the response with your trip notes so you can revisit it without relying on memory.

  • Which of my current documents applies to my nonresident situation?
  • Does anything need updating, and where should I obtain clarification?
  • What final documentation should I expect after clinical review?
  • Which official source explains the limits relevant to my plans?
  • How can I confirm that an establishment has the appropriate current license?

Keep health and logistics in the conversation

Ask your clinician about your health history, medications and planned activities. Discuss any concerns before your visit, arrange sober transportation and leave room in your itinerary to rest or adjust your plans. Keep health questions on your list alongside document questions.

Keep the official sources below with your travel notes and seek qualified guidance for questions specific to your circumstances. For help preparing your medical evaluation, contact our local support team. MedCann Doctors helps you prepare your application and medical evaluation.
